Weight-loss surgery typically is reserved for those individuals 100 pounds or more overweight or who have a Body Mass Index of 40 or higher.
People with a BMI of 35 or greater with one or more obesity-related health conditions may also qualify in certain circumstances. Generally, these patients have obesity-related physical problems such as knee, back or hip pain or they have high-risk conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Patient selection is based on the National Institutes of Health criteria.
